In May 2006, Toronto high school students Kimberly and Gerald Lizano-Sossa were viciously apprehended by immigration enforcement officials while at school. In response, the Toronto District School Board passed a Don't Ask, Don't Tell Policy that made all TDSB schools a sanctuary zone. No student should have to face the fear of being dragged outside by immigration authorities while in a learning environment, regardless of immigration status.
A few years ago York witnessed the attempted deportation of student Sierra Leonte- a high achieving academic student and community leader who could no longer afford her tuition fees and did not have Immigration status. The Don't Ask, Don't Tell campaign seeks make our campus a sanctuary zone where all people, including immigrants, can learn without the fear of being deported.
